Moose Hierarchy - Who Rules the Roost?

Whoever said "size doesn't matter", was obviously not a moose hunter. Largest of the deer family, moose range from the Northern United States through Northern Canada and Alaska. Like many things, size is relative. All moose are huge, roughly the size of a thoroughbred horse, but even among giants variations exist.

Here is a quick rundown of moose and what you should know before you go.

1. Shiras or Wyoming Moose:

Smallest of the moose sub-species, these giants range the Northern United States and Southern Canada. Record book Shiras moose will sport total antler mass of 186" or greater Boone & Crockett.

This is one of the tougher hunts to procur, because most areas where these moose are hunted, are limited entry draw units. Make sure you know the regulations, prior to booking a hunt with an outfitter.

2. Canadian Moose:

Middle brother in moose hierarchy, this moose ranges from British Columbia in the West to Newfoundland in the East. Larger than the Shiras moose, record book Canadian moose will carry antler mass totaling 220" or greater Boone and Crockett.

Plentiful numbers, and guaranteed tags throughout many of the Canadian provinces, this is a great animal to pursue. Expect to pay $5, 000 to $8, 000 for an eight day hunt with a quality outfitter.

3. Alaska-Yukon Moose:

As suggested by its name, these northern giants roam tundra from Alaska to the Yukon. The big daddy of all moose, antler spreads will exceed 70" and total antler mass over 250" Boone & Crockett.

Expect to pay more for these guys. Cost for a quality Alaska moose will range between $10, 000 and $15, 000. This will be a great investment and a once in a lifetime trophy.

This is a brief overview of moose and what you should expect from each species you hunt. Talk to your hunting outfitter and guides to make sure that they are hunting the species that you are after.

Remember, time in the field is a gift, savor it!
