When will Revival come to modern churches?
When Revival Might Come
A few years back, I had a man in my church who told me that the reason we had no revival in America was because of Christmas trees! That was his conclusion. Yes, he was serious, and, no, he was not high on dope when he told me this. ?Christmas trees are pagan,? he said, ?and every Christian I know celebrates Christmas by decorating a Christmas tree.? Personally, I doubt that Christians having a Christmas tree are responsible for the spiritual state of America.
So what do I think must happen for America to get on track for revival? First, let me say that America, as a whole, does not need revival! Why? Because you cannot revive something that has never been resurrected or regenerated. Revival, by definition, requires life to exist. America as a whole is lost and needs to get saved. The church in America, though, is in desperate need of revival. When might this happen? What needs to take place? This is what I want to deal with this month. This will not win me many friends, but I believe that in order for America to experience revival, preachers have got to get right. There is not enough space in the Trumpet to discuss all the areas where preachers could get right. Allow me to consider the area of ethics.
Ethics is a big subject. We will only consider two areas of ethics: money and members. It is sad to admit, but some of the most unethical people I have known in the last twenty years were preachers. I know an evangelist who preached a Sunday night service at a church in Illinois. The pastor announced that they would receive a special offering for the evangelist. The evangelist put twenty dollars in the offering. The offering was received. The preacher gave the evangelist twenty-seven dollars. The evangelist found out much later that the offering was $427.00. The preacher stole the other $400.00. He used it to pay for a deer hunting trip that week. Another evangelist told me he knew of at least eleven occasions during the course of his ministry where all or part of his love offering was stolen! That is wicked! Would you steal someone?s offering? Preacher, how are your ethics in the area of money?
When a member of another independent Baptist church visits my pastor?s church, he calls that person?s pastor before the next Lord?s day. That is pastorial ethics! He has pastored the same church for sixteen years. During that time, he has called other independent Baptist churches in his area when their members have visited. One pastor in his area told the members of the church he pastors that they do not need to go to Pastor Allison?s church because Pastor Allison will call and tell him. Yet, that same preacher has never called Pastor Allison once in sixteen years when someone from Pastor Allison?s church has been in his church. That is unethical. God is not going to bless that! Preacher, church-hoppers are usually trouble! If you don't have enough ethics to call the pastor of the church that the church-hopper left, you deserve all the heartache they will bring your way. What is more, you will reap what you sow! Preacher, how are your ethics in the area of church members? If we want our churches to have revival, maybe we need to start by having a revival in our ethics.
