Choosing a Deer Trail Camera

When you have a need for a hunting camera you need to consider what you are going to be using it for and how this will fit into your budget. It will depend on the location of the camera and what kind of shots you are looking to capture. Take a look at the different scenarios presented below and you will have a better idea of what will best suit your needs.

Cameras for a Feeding Area

If you are using the camera to capture images of a feeding area, you do not have to be as picky about the quality of the shots and the trigger speed. Since the Deer will be stationary most of the time, you will have the time to let the detection device work and you will still get the shot that you are looking for. If this is all that you will be using the camera for, you do not need to spend as much on the equipment.

Cameras for a Trail Area

On the Trail, the deer will be moving and now you need to think about a camera that will take a picture faster. It will need a more sensitive detection system and a quick infrared flash. Keep in mind that you are trying to figure out what kind of animals are going through and how often they are there. You don't need to see the color of their eyes so a camera with an infrared flash will suit this kind of use best. You will need to position the camera close to the trail so the trigger time is more important than it would be in a feeding site.

Cameras for a Food Plot

This is going to require a camera that has a nice wide detection area and one that has an extensive detection zone. The flash should be a powerful one, as you will be taking these pictures at a greater range and if you don't use a good strong flash you will not get the pictures that you want.

Cameras for Remote Hunting Areas

In this case you need to consider that you will not be by every day to check on the equipment, so using a camera that will be easy on the batteries is important. There are a few things you can do to give you longer battery life; you can hook up a 12 volt to your equipment or use an external battery pack. Another method is to reduce the amount of battery that the camera is using. In order to do this an infrared flash would really help. Not only do they not scare away the animals, but they will take many times more flashes with the same amount of power as a traditional incandescent flash.

Cameras in Public Areas

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that if you are setting up in a public area then it is more likely that someone will steal your equipment. Try to camouflage the camera as best as you can. You can also use a security box; this might be a worthwhile investment to keep your camera equipment. You can either take that route or just spend less on the camera and take your chances. Even the best security devices can be compromised by the thief that really wants to get at your equipment.

So choose carefully when it comes to buying equipment and consider where you are going to use it. This way you will get the most out of it. Happy hunting!
