A few questions about sport rifles, I'd love some informed answers please?
OK, firstly, let me explain that I am a complete novice to guns, shooting, hunting, anything. Since I was a boy I have loved the stories of my grandfather (now sadly passed away), who was Rhodesian and enjoyed big game hunting before the war. I know a lot has changed since then but one day I would like to go back to southern Africa for a safari. Question 1: How accessible is African hunting these days- do you have to be a millionaire who has friends in the game industry over there? Question 2: I am aware that the 'Nitro Express' round is still a popular choice for big game hunters in Africa, but the rifles that fire these rounds are very expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives to African big game hunting or the large 'elephant guns'? For example, could a .50 cal rifle be 'bored out' somehow, to say .600 Nitro? Thanks! Natay: Please, what is 'PH'? Mark C; I am sorry if I have offended you. I clearly state, however, that I am a beginner and know nothing of firearms or hunting, but I am interested in learning. I really don't think there was any need for the insult, and I do not imply in my question that I have any sort of 'family connection' in the African hunting scene- I ask if you have to in order to hunt there! Are all rifle ranges like this I know safety is important but?
The gun range I normally go to requires that you have a scoped rifle and shoot from a bench rest. I know this is probably safer, and definitely will produce better accuracy, but If I want to practice with my 30-06 unscoped that I carry while walking through the woods what am I supposed to do. I don't use a scope not because I don't appreciate them they definitely produce better shots at long range, but I am kind of a klutz with delicate instruments. I scratched my dads scope on one of his guns by accident(I know I'm an idiot) so I just avoid keeping them on workhorse guns if I can. no sense in breaking expensive equipment. He had died and I inherited it. I was sad obviously, but glad that he couldn't shoot me for it from the earn on the mantle. Anyway if a bear where to charge me(unlikely, and god forbid) I can't say. Oh wait let me find someplace to sit while the bear leans against a tree and lights up a cig while I get situated. Plus there is just something more manly about standing firing a rifle with Iron sights. reminiscent of african big game hunting. Especially with my great wide brimmed safari hat for my range days. Are all rifle ranges like this? Both of the closest ones to me are. I don't mind using a bench rest but what if I want to practice standing.

They even cover gun powder and new bullets for re-filling purposes. I love my free ammunition.
